Brazil to Grant Haitian Immigrants Permanent Residency

On Wednesday the Brazilian government announced that it would grant permanent residency to 43,871 Haitian immigrants who entered the country illegally.

TeleSUR reports that the “joint act of recognition, authorization and concession of permanence” was signed in Brazil by Minister of Justice Jose Eduardo Cardozo, and Minister of Labor Miguel Rossetto. The act gives Haitians up to a year to request foreign resident identification documents. Haitians, who are formally accepted by Brazil, will be granted stability and security.

According to Dream In TV, under the plan, undocumented Haitians will be able to remain in the country and seek employment. They will also be eligible for government assistance.

Haitian immigrants began arriving in Brazil in January 2010, after the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that killed an estimated 316,000, and injured an estimated 300,000 people. It is also estimated that 1.3 million Haitians were displaced after the earthquake.
